Korean War Commemorative Ceremony

#KoreanWarForgottenNoMore

OTTAWA, ON— The Honourable Yonah Martin, Grand Patron of KVA Heritage Unit and Member of Parliament Nelly Shin will join His Excellency Keung Ryong Chang, Korean Ambassador to Canada; Parliamentary Secretary of Defence, Member of Parliament Anita Vendenbeld; Bill Black, President of the Korean War Veterans Association of Canada – National Capital Unit 7 and select veterans; and The Korean War Commemorative Committee (KWCC) will commemorate the 71st anniversary of the breakout of the Korean War (on June 25th) and the 68th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice (on July 27th), in a wreath laying ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa on June 20, 2021.

The Korea Day ceremony on June 20th is part of the 3-year 70th anniversary of the Korean War campaign (#KoreanWarForgottenNoMore) which aims to commemorate milestone battles and events of the Korean War over the course of the 70th anniversary of the Korean War Years (June 25, 2020 to July 27, 2023).

The Korean War is Canada’s 3rd bloodiest war, in which more than 26,000 Canadians from across Canada defended the Republic of Korea against Communist tyranny, and another 7000 served in peacekeeping duties from 1953-1955. Now in their mid 80’s and 90’s the brave young Canadians still feel the sorrow in their hearts when they remember what happened upon their return after fighting in a grueling war to a quiet country in peaceful times, and felt as though Canada had forgotten them.

In honour of the hundreds of Canadian fallen, still buried to this day in Korea (at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan, Korea), it is important for Canadians to stand united with the remaining heroes of the Korean War, though smaller in number day by day, to ensure that their legacies of service and sacrifice are never forgotten.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the wreath-laying ceremony on June 20, 2021 will be limited to 10 people (of the official party). The ceremony will be broadcast live (on Facebook Live) for public consumption.
